Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a new federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday's name is a combination of the words "June" and "nineteenth", as it was on June 19, 1865, when the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War was ordered. However, there remained enslaved people and these people did not gain their freedom until the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution on December 6, 1865.
Earlier Juneteenth celebrations can be traced back to 1866, initially consisting of church-centered community gatherings in Texas. They expanded throughout the Southern states among newly emancipated African American slaves and their descendants, evolving into more commercial events in the 1920s and 1930s, often featuring a culinary festival. Today, Juneteenth observances are held nationwide to honor those who were enslaved and significantly contributed to the building of America. Recognizing Juneteenth is a part of American history.
